environment day
In June 2026 – just in time to celebrate World Environment Day – we hit an incredible new milestone in sustainable bus travel.
We’ve long been committed to creating environmentally friendly transport options across northern England. This includes the purchasing and implementation of all-electric, Hybrid-electric, and biofuel-powered buses, as well as the infrastructure needed to support them.
Electric buses
In 2013, we began introducing the first generation of electric buses into our fleets – with a further order in 2018 – before progressing to ‘next generation’ electric vehicles in 2024.
This included all-electric single- and double-decker buses in Harrogate in North Yorkshire, and then in Keighley in West Yorkshire.
39 of these all-electric vehicles have been delivered to the Harrogate Bus Company, with an additional 15 rolling into service on Keighley Bus Company’s SHUTTLE 662 service in Autumn 2025.
And in June – right in time to celebrate World Environment Day – we finally hit the milestone that we’d had our sights on… 5 million kilometres of electric transport!
For Harrogate specifically, more than 5,200 tonnes of CO2 are now being saved every year thanks to these buses, which is approximately the same as:
- The electricity needed to power 1000 homes for one year
- Driving 13 million miles in an average petrol-powered car
- The annual carbon footprint of over 420 people
- Charging a smartphone over 330 million times
This includes 2,000 tonnes from our flagship service, The 36 – and that’s before any of these single- or double-decker buses even carry any passengers.
Complementing these all-electric vehicles is a fleet of Hybrid buses, currently in service under the Leeds Bradford Airport FLYER network.
And the best part?
The electricity needed to charge their next-generation batteries comes from renewable energy Wind Farms up in Scotland!

Biodiesel
In 2023, we partnered with Argent Energy for the supply of Dieselite – a high-quality biofuel that we use in our remaining diesel-powered buses.
In early 2026, we renewed our contract with Argent Energy, with Managing Director Henri Rohard stating that:
“This revolutionary partnership has enabled us to achieve incredible environmental benefits on a commercially viable basis, delivering on our commitment to low-carbon-emission bus transportation across the North of England.”
Mike Copson, Group Head of Fuel Sales at Argent Energy, said of the partnership:
“Transdev are doing a great job of decarbonising and it’s a privilege to support them by supplying them with our Dieselite fuel… Argent is proud to continue doing that with our sustainable and renewable alternative to straight diesel that saves carbon emissions and delivers a more sustainable public transport across the region”.
Just a few months later, we introduced a brand-new fleet of low-emission buses in Blackburn to go into operation on the popular 464 route.
Sustainable practice
And to round out our World Environment Day celebration, we also highlighted our sustainable operation and business practices in our offices and depots across northern England.
This includes collecting and recycling rainwater for our bus washes, utilising carbon-offset paper for our timetables, leaflets, and promotional material, and creating a ‘Future Ready’ depot for our services out of York.
