Travel to Pickering, Goathland or Whitby on Coastliner 840 and you’re all set to go back in time, with a ride behind a heritage steam or diesel locomotive on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
The line runs for 18 miles through stunning moor and valley terrain from Pickering, via Levisham, Newton Dale Halt and Goathland – famous as Aidensfield in the ever-popular ITV drama series Heartbeat – to Grosmont, where you can explore the locomotive works where the railway’s fleet is maintained.
Selected trains continue for a further six miles on the Esk Valley Railway to reach Whitby, where the station is in the middle of this historic Yorkshire port and seaside resort.
For the ultimate day trip to the Moors and coast, why not travel one way on the railway and return by bus – or the other way round! You’ll enjoy amazing scenery and sweeping views from the bus on top of the Moors, and peaceful valleys from the train.
Take Coastliner 840 from Leeds, Tadcaster, York and Malton to Pickering – leave the bus at the Royal Oak on Eastgate, and walk through the town centre to reach the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s terminus station. Or travel on one of our selected 840 journeys which continue from Thornton-le-Dale up onto the North York Moors, serving Goathland before arriving in Whitby Bus Station, right in the centre of town with no parking hassle.
